Bearcats picked second in preseason polls

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – For the first time since 2005 the Northwest Missouri State football team was picked to finished second in the MIAA Coaches and Media Preseason Polls announced by the league office on Monday.

The defending National Champions, Pittsburg State claimed the top spot in both polls receiving 192 overall points and 12 first place votes in the coaches’ poll and also received 24 first place votes in the media poll.

Northwest earned two first place votes in the coaches’ poll and 11 first place votes in the media poll after finishing second in the MIAA for the first time since 2005. Behind Northwest is Missouri Western who received a single first place vote in both the coaches and media poll as Washburn checks in at No. 4 and Central Missouri rounds out the top five.

MIAA newcomer Nebraska-Kearney was picked sixth in both polls after an NCAA playoff appearance in 2011 and is followed by Emporia State at No. 7 and another newcomer, Lindenwood, at No. 8.

The coaches’ poll ranks Northeastern State at No. 9 while the media pick gave Fort Hays State the nod in the ninth spot. Northeastern State was picked just a spot lower in the media poll at No. 10 as the Riverhawks are one of two new schools from Oklahoma to enter the MIAA in 2012.

The final spots in the coaches’ poll start with Missouri Southern at No. 10, followed by Fort Hays State at No. 11, Central Oklahoma at No. 12, Southwest Baptist at No. 13, Truman State at No. 14 and Lincoln picked to finish last.

The media poll’s final five spots find Missouri Southern at No. 11 with Truman State at No. 12 and Southwest Baptist at No. 13. Central Oklahoma was picked 14th as Lincoln also finished 15th in the media version.

Northwest is looking for its ninth straight NCAA playoff appearance currently the longest streak in NCAA Division II and return 13 starters after an 11-3 campaign a year ago. The season opener for Northwest is slated for Aug. 30 at 7 p.m. against East Central (Okla.).
