Bearcats open spring practice
MARYVILLE, Mo. – Northwest Missouri State football players and coaches returned to the field Monday as the team went through the first of 15 spring workouts at Bearcat Stadium.
The Bearcats went through drills during the two-hour workout as the skies cleared up for an almost perfect afternoon. Second-year head coach Adam Dorrel praised the tempo and enthusiasm of the players during the first spring workout.
“The weather has been great the first two days and tempo and energy has been unbelievable,” Dorrel said. “The best part of spring practice, besides getting to be back outside in the nice weather, is just getting to see the kids again. The winter month’s players are in the weight room and coaches are recruiting so you don’t have the interaction with the kids, so it’s nice to see them again and watching them grow and improving.”
Northwest welcomes back 24 players who saw significant playing time during last year’s NCAA national quarterfinal run. Four Bearcats donning the green and white for the first time included David Tooley, Brandon Dixon, Stacy Whitaker and Adam Vanderpool. All four players transferred in at semester break and hope to make an impact in the upcoming season by getting the extra reps during spring practice.
The only notable missing from Monday’s workout was wide receiver Tyler Shaw. Shaw, taking a redshirt in track and field, by NCAA rules is not allowed to participate in the spring practices.
Coaches worked the players through position drills along with 7-on-7 scrimmages in helmets. The Bearcats will continue in helmets before adding shoulder pads on Wednesday and Thursday.
“There has been a really high energy and we are getting a lot of work done,” Dorrel said. “Spring practice is a time for the players to learn and especially the younger players who haven’t got many reps; everyone is learning from their mistakes, but the key has been the high energy and everyone coming ready to learn and go hard all practice.”
The Bearcats will host their annual Spring Game Saturday, April 14, at Bearcat Stadium. The game will kick off at 5 p.m. as the Bearcats wrap up spring workouts. Northwest’s Department of Athletics invites all fans to come out to a full day of activities, starting with a softball double header at noon at the Bearcat Softball Field, along with a modified Bearcat Zone. Fans will have several opportunities to be involved during the game by calling plays and interacting with the team on the field.
