8 Bearcats earn All-Region accolades
BROOKFIELD, Ill. – Northwest Missouri State placed eight players on the Don Hansen All-Super Region Four Team as released by the committee last week and highlighted by first-teamers Cody Johnson and Chad Kilgore.
Northwest finished the season 11-3 and recorded its eighth trip to the NCAA Division II playoffs, the longest streak in the nation. The Bearcats also led the nation in scoring averaging over 50 points per game during the regular season and scoring 60 plus points five times.
Seniors Kilgore and Johnson received First Team accolades, as the honor marks the fourth different organization to recognize Kilgore on defense, all first-team selections. Johnson earns his second all-America honor after being named second-team offensive lineman by CoSIDA last month.
A quartet of Bearcats earned second-team All-Region accolades with James Franklin, Kyle Kilgore, and Jordan Simmons claiming a spot on the second-team offense while senior Josh Lorenson was tabbed second-team defensive tackle.
Franklin earned honors at running back after rushing for over 1,000 yards and leading the team in scoring while Simmons earned a spot as all purpose back. Simmons split time in the back field also rushing for over 900 yards and was second in scoring with 21 touchdowns including three TDs on special teams.
Kilgore was tabbed second-team TE after finishing with 23 catches and averaging an amazing 19.2 yards per catch with eight TDs, second most receiving touchdowns by a Bearcat during 2011.
The first-team and second-team All-Region selections advance to a national ballot from which the 2011 Don Hansen NCAA Division II All-America team will be named in January.
A pair of Bearcats also earned third-team honors as Tyler Shaw was tabbed third-team WR and Bryce Enyard was named third-team DB. Enyard was named the MIAA Freshman of the Year with six interceptions while Shaw led the Bearcats in receiving with 815 yards and nine touchdowns.
The Don Hansen team carries out the legacy of long-time small college football advocate Don Hansen, who passed away at age 75 on Aug. 29, 2010. Hansen, from Brookfield, Ill., started and published Don Hansen’s National Weekly Football Gazette for three decades, selecting NCAA Division II All-America teams for the first time in 1988. Don Hansen’s Football Gazette began selecting Division II All-Region squads in 2003.
A total of 101 players earned some form of Football Gazette All-Super Region Four honors. Players from 31 of the 35 football-playing schools in Super Region Four earned All-Region accolades.
