Northwest finishes #5 in AFCA Poll

Complete Top 25

MARYVILLE, Mo. – The American Football Coaches Association released the final poll for the 2011 season with the conclusion of the Division II National Championship on Saturday and the Bearcats finish the season at No. 5.


Northwest finished the season 11-3 earning its eighth straight NCAA playoff appearance, the longest current streak in NCAA DII football. The Bearcats also led the nation in points per game during the regular season averaging 53 points per game including five games of 62 points or more. Northwest holds the record for being ranked the most times in the AFCA Division II Poll at 139 weeks out of a possible 148 since 2000, the first year of the NCAA DII Coaches’ Poll.


Pittsburg State returns to the top spot after a 35-21 win over Wayne State (Mich.) in the national championship game last Saturday. The Gorillas claimed their second NCAA DII title and first since 1991 to hold the final No. 1 ranking followed by Wayne St. at No. 2


National semifinalist, Winston-Salem State (N.C.) finished No. 3 just ahead of Delta State who checks in at No. 4 followed by the Bearcats rounding out the top five.


2010 National Champion Minnesota-Duluth finishes at No. 6 followed by Lone Star Conference Champion, Midwestern State at No. 7, who the Bearcats claimed a 38-31 overtime victory from in the second-round. New Haven (Conn.) finished 11-2 on the year at No. 8 and was followed by Colorado State-Pueblo at No. 9, while future MIAA member Nebraska-Kearney rounds out the top 10.


NCAA playoff teams and MIAA members Washburn finished at No. 11 as Missouri Western closed out the season at No. 18. Central Missouri fell out of the top 25 after the loss in the Lower Kanza Bowl, but was receiving votes.


Also receiving votes in the final poll was East Central (Okla.) the 2012 season opener for the Bearcats at Bearcat Stadium. Time and date for the season opener has yet to be set.
