Bearcats slip to No. 6 in Regional Rankings

MARYVILLE, Mo. - Following Northwest Missouri State’s loss to Missouri Western on Saturday a lot of questions surrounded the Bearcat football team chances at an eighth straight NCAA Playoff appearance. On Monday the NCAA DII Regional Rankings were released and the Bearcats stand at No. 6 holding onto the final playoff spot heading into the final week of the season.

After standing at No. 3 and almost assured a home playoff game, the Bearcats loss on Saturday has made this week’s matchup with Emporia State a must win game.

Midwestern State regains the top spot in Super Region four followed by Washburn who knocked off previous No. 1 Pittsburg State. The Gorillas stand at No. 3 followed by Missouri Western, who just a week ago stood on the outside looking in at No. 7. The top six teams earn a spot in the NCAA DII playoffs with each of the top two seeds receiving first round byes.

The rest of the playoff picture has Abilene Christian at No. 5 followed by the Bearcats at No. 6 while Ouachita Baptist sits at No. 7 followed by Humboldt State at No. 8. The final two spots belong to West Texas A&M who fell from No. 6 to No. 9 and Central Missouri rounds out the top 10.

Entering the final week of play top seeded Midwestern State travels to Northeastern State (Okla.), while Washburn plays host to No. 10 Central Missouri. The Gorillas host Missouri Southern in their annual Miners Bowl as Missouri Western travels to Fort Hays State. Both Abilene Christian and Northwest are at home in the final week as ACU hosts Incarnate Word and the Bearcats play host to Emporia State on Senior Day.

Earlier on Monday the AFCA Top 25 was released and the Bearcats fell out of the top 10 to No. 11. Missouri Western jumped to No. 17 with the win while fellow MIAA foes Washburn moved to No. 6 and Pitt State fell to No. 9.

The final NCAA Region Rankings will be released on ESPNEWS Sunday night.
