Bearcats No. 3 in regional poll
MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Northwest Missouri State Bearcats were ranked No. 3 in the NCAA Division II Super Region Four rankings, which were released for the first time this season Monday afternoon.
At 7-1 the Bearcats sit behind No. 1 Midwestern State (7-0) and No. 2 Pittsburg State (8-0), the Gorillas handed Northwest their only loss of the season. The top two teams in each region will receive byes in the first round of the NCAA Playoffs which kickoff Nov. 19 followed by second round action on Nov. 26. The national championship game is set for Dec. 17 in Florence, Ala.
Last year the MIAA got three teams into the playoffs with Central Missouri, Missouri Western and Northwest. Again three MIAA teams sit in the top six with Washburn at No. 4 joining Northwest and Pitt State.
Abilene Christian checks in at No. 5 while West Texas A&M rounds out the top six. Both schools are from the Lone Star Conference which also sent three teams to post-season play last year.
Checking in at No. 7 is Missouri Western, who the Bearcats will meet on Nov. 5, in St. Joseph, followed by Ouachita Baptist at No. 8, Humboldt State at No. 9 and Central Missouri at No. 10. Ouachita Baptist is in Super Region Four after leaving the Gulf South Conference for the newly formed Great American Conference. Humboldt State is a member of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
