Bearcats Begin Practice Thursday
MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Bearcats begin preparations for the upcoming 2011 football season where more than 110 players are expected to report for fall camp on Wednesday.
Northwest Missouri State players will go through introductory meetings and physicals on Wednesday before practices begin Thursday at 9:15 a.m. Head Coach Adam Dorrel will take his players through morning practices during the weekend before beginning two-a-day practices on Tuesday Aug. 16.
Trying to avoid the heat, the Bearcats night practices will run shorter than morning practices most likely starting at 4 p.m. and running for an hour and a half.
The Bearcats begin the preseason ranked fourth in two preseason polls and are coming off their fifth consecutive MIAA title and carry a 46-game conference winning streak into the season. Northwest has again been picked to win the MIAA in both the preseason coaches and media polls, which were released at the beginning of the month. Last year's championship came after a number of close calls; however the Bearcats finished 9-0 in the MIAA and 12-2 overall, falling to Minnesota-Duluth in the National Semifinal.
Northwest is again expected to be led by all-America Jake Soy and first team all-MIAA performer Jordan Simmons. Last year Soy became the all-time leader in receiving touchdowns at Northwest and tied the all-time MIAA leader with 40 career touchdown receptions. On defense the Bearcats will again be led by Chad Kilgore, who led Northwest in tackles, and defensive lineman Josh Lorenson.
