Northwest Top Pick at Media Day

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State Bearcats have been picked to win their sixth consecutive MIAA championship by the league's head coaches and members of the media during Monday's football media day at the Downtown Marriott Hotel in Kansas City.

The vote is the also the sixth consecutive season the Bearcats have been picked to win the league and the seventh time in nine years.  Northwest is coming off their fifth straight MIAA title and perfect conference record in as many seasons.

The Bearcats hold an MIAA record 46 consecutive MIAA wins entering the 2011 season and are looking for their 13th championship in the last 16 seasons.  Their consecutive winning streak dates back to the 2005 season.

Northwest received seven of 10 possible first place votes in the coaches' poll (coaches are not allowed to vote for their own team) for a total of 78 points.  Second place Washburn received the final three first places votes followed by Central Missouri who was picked to finished third.

Missouri Western, who reached the NCAA playoffs last year before being eliminated by the Bearcats, were picked fourth with Pittsburg State rounding out the top five.  Missouri Southern was selected to finish sixth followed by Emporia State and Truman at seventh and eighth with only a single vote separating the three teams. 

Fort Hays State was picked ninth and in their first season in the MIAA, Lincoln rounded out the 10 schools receiving nine votes.

The only difference in the coaches' poll and the media was Emporia State at No. 6 and Missouri Southern picked to finish seventh.

The Bearcats again received 23 of a possible 35 first place votes in the media poll.  Washburn picked up seven first place votes followed by Central Missouri receiving five first place votes in the media poll as well.

10. Lincoln - 9 pts.
