MARYVILLE, Mo.-Myles Burnsides '09 is the South Central Region Scholar-Athlete of the Year as selected by the NCAA Division II Conference Commissioners Association. Burnsides was a four-year starter for the Bearcats from 2006-09 and was named National Defensive Player of the Year in 2008.
The commissioners from the regions that comprise the Division II basketball alignment selected the regional winners. To be nominated, a student-athlete must have attained a 3.0 career cumulative grade point average and possess outstanding athletic credentials.
Burnsides graduated with a 3.90 grade-point average and carries a 3.86 average while working to obtain his master's degree in business administration. He is a three-time, first-team All-MIAA choice, a two-time All-American and is the first player in program history to be named National Defensive Player of the Year.
Burnsides finished with 294 career tackles, the most by a defensive back and eighth-most in program history. His 16 interceptions are the third-most in program history. Burnsides played in 59 collegiate games, started in four national championship contests and went 37-0 against MIAA opponents.
The Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award provides the opportunity for Division II to highlight the extraordinary achievements of its student-athletes. The national award winners will be announced later this month.
