Northwest Bearcats

Press Release

Aug. 31, 2010

Thursday’s pregame festivities

MARYVILLE, Mo.-Liberty Mutual's Coach of the Year presentation, the introduction of two national championship trophies and a visit from Missouri governor Jay Nixon highlight the festivities taking place prior to Northwest Missouri State hosting Texas A&M-Kingsville on the gridiron Thursday at Bearcat Stadium. The festivities will begin on the field approximately one half hour prior to the scheduled 6 p.m. kickoff.

Lisa Paige from Liberty Mutual Group will be on hand to present Northwest head football coach Mel Tjeerdsma with the 2009 Coach of the Year Award. The award comes with a $20,000 scholarship award for the institution's alumni association and a $50,000 charitable donation from Liberty Mutual. Representatives from Big Brothers, Big Sisters, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and First Street Baptist Church will be on hand for the ceremony.

Members of football's 2009 senior class will return to the field to present the 2009 national championship trophy. The seniors will then escort the trophy to the Loch-O'Rourke Family Center where it will join the 1998 and 1999 championship trophies on display for all to see.

Members of Northwest's 2010 UCA national championship cheerleading squad will present their trophy prior to Thursday's game. The squad, led by head coach Jason Sack, won the program's first title back in January.

After the presentations, the top-ranked Bearcat football team will host the 14th-ranked Javelinas in the season opener for both programs. Northwest has won 30 of its last 31 home games but has dropped its last three season openers. Texas A&M-Kingsville finished 9-3 last season and was one of 24 NCAA playoff participants.
