KANSAS CITY, Mo.—The defending national champion Northwest Missouri State Bearcats have been picked to win their fifth consecutive MIAA championship by the league’s head coaches and media as announced Monday during the league’s media day at the Mariott Hotel.

Northwest has been predicted to win the conference crown for the fifth year in a row and for the sixth time in eight seasons. The Bearcats have proven the coaches right each time, tying for the title in 2003 and winning it outright with unblemished marks the past four seasons.

Northwest has won the MIAA championship 11 times in the last 14 seasons. The Bearcats have won 37 straight conference contests and have 40 straight wins against MIAA opponents dating back to 2005. The team’s average margin of victory in those 40 games is better than 25 points.

Northwest received nine of a possible 10 first-place votes in the coaches poll (coaches can’t vote for their own team) and all 33 first-place votes by the league’s media, which conducted a preseason poll for the second time. The media group consisted of print and television media, radio crews and sports information directors of each institution.

Picks two, three and four are the only ones that change when comparing both polls. The coaches like Nebraska-Omaha, Washburn and Missouri Western to finish second, third and fourth, respectively. The media selected Washburn second, Missouri Western third and Nebraska-Omaha fourth.

Central Missouri was picked fifth in both polls. Pittsburg State, the last MIAA team to beat Northwest, is ranked sixth in both polls.

Two teams, Missouri Southern and Emporia State, begin their season Aug. 26. Truman, Washburn, Central Missouri, Fort Hays State and Pittsburg State will start Aug. 28. The Bearcats open at home against Texas A&M-Kingsville Sept. 2 and opens MIAA play at Nebraska-Omaha Sept. 18.
