Council a National Finalist for the Harlon Hill

LaRon Council

MARYVILLE, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State senior running back LaRon Council has been named one of nine national finalists for the Harlon Hill Award as the NCAA Division II College Football Player of the Year.

Council is the second Northwest player to reach the national ballot. He joins wide receiver Tony Miles, who finished sixth in the voting in 2000.

Council is joined on the ballot by two other running backs and six quarterbacks. National voting will conclude Nov. 29 and the top three finishers will be invited to Florence for the presentation banquet to be held Dec. 11, a day prior to the national championship game.

A first-team All-American a year ago, Council was named the MIAA's Most Valuable Offensive Player after leading the league in rushing and rushing touchdowns for the second consecutive season. His 1,202 yards on the ground and 16 scores both ranked 10th in the nation.

Council has five 100-yard rushing efforts and two games in which he totaled 99. He ran for a career-high 208 yards in Northwest's win against Fort Hays State.

Council has played five of 11 games from start-to-finish due in part to an offense that ranks second nationally in scoring. He's carried 381 times and played 19 consecutive games without losing a fumble dating back to last season.

Council is the fourth-leading rusher in program history (3,464 yards) and has scored the second-most touchdowns (56). He's started 26 consecutive games and made 30 starts in his four-year career with the Bearcats. In those four seasons, Northwest is 49-6 and without a loss in conference play (36-0).
