Eleven Bearcats Earn All-MIAA Honors

Council Named Offensive POY; Tjeerdsma Named COY

KANSAS CITY, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State had 11 players, or half its starting lineup, named to the All-MIAA Football Team announced today by the conference office.

Northwest had nine first-team honorees and two second-team selections. Included in the tally is senior running back LaRon Council, who was named the league's Most Valuable Offensive Player. It's the third year in a row a Bearcat has captured the award. Head Coach Mel Tjeerdsma was named Coach of the Year.

Tjeerdsma picked up Coach of the Year honors for the fourth year in a row and for the 11th time in 16 seasons at Northwest. He guided the Bearcats to a 9-0 league record for the fourth year in a row and for the ninth time since 1997. No one has won as many MIAA Coach of the Year awards as Tjeerdsma (1995-2000, 2002, 2006-09).

Council led the league in rushing for the second year in a row and is the nation's eighth-leading rusher overall. He's carried 212 times for 1,202 yards for an average of 5.7 yards per carry. He also led the league with 16 rushing touchdowns, which rank ninth nationally. Council added a career-high 33 receptions for 271 yards.

Council is the second Northwest running back to earn MVP honors. He joins Xavier Omon, who earned the award in 2007. Quarterback Chris Greisen (1998), wide receiver Tony Miles (2000) and quarterback Joel Osborn (2008) are the only other Bearcats to receive the honor. Council is a two-time first-team honoree.

Senior safety Myles Burnsides, last year's MIAA and national defensive player of the year, is a first-team selection for the second year in a row. Burnsides' 56 tackles rank second on the team. He's one of three Bearcats with four interceptions this year and had a 40-yard return for a touchdown in Northwest's win against Fort Hays State.

Other first-team selections by the league's coaches include junior quarterback Blake Bolles and sophomore wide receiver Jake Soy, a unanimous pick. The two have hooked up a record-22 times this season. Bolles has passed for more than 3,200 yards and thrown 35 touchdowns - the second-highest tally in Division II. Soy has caught 61 passes for 1,116 yards. His 22 touchdowns are tied for the sixth-most in Division II history.

Junior offensive linemen Brett Grozinger at left guard and Jason Wiseman at right tackle make it five offensive players named to the first team. Northwest's line helps boast the nation's second-highest scoring team (44.6 ppg) with the fourth-best average of total offense (493.7 ypg). Northwest's passing attack ranks seventh nationally. The Bearcats have allowed 18 sacks in 11 games.

Three defensive linemen received all-conference nods for the Bearcats. Senior tackle Tyler Roach was a first-team pick while senior nose guard Shayne Shade and senior end Sean Paddock were second-team selections. Junior defensive end Kyle Sunderman earned honorable mention.

The quartet has helped Northwest rank ninth nationally with 35 sacks and 12th in run defense. The Bearcats are allowing 87 yards rushing per game. Northwest also led the league in total defense, scoring defense, pass efficiency defense and interceptions.

Roach has 38 tackles to go with 3.5 sacks and six tackles-for-loss. He's also blocked three kicks. Shade has 35 tackles, 2.5 sacks and three tackles-for-loss.

Paddock, a returning All-American and unanimous first-team choice last year, missed five of 11 games due to injury. His 5.5 sacks continue to lead the team. He also became Northwest's all-time sack leader this year and has 25 during his four-year career.

Rounding out the list of Northwest honorees are sophomore linebacker Chad Kilgore and junior cornerback Ryan Jones, both first-team picks. Kilgore leads Northwest with 73 tackles. He also has a sack and an interception. Jones is tied for the team lead with four interceptions. He's also credited with eight pass break-ups and his 42 tackles are tied for fourth on the team.

Wide receivers Tyler Shaw and Abe Qaoud, linebackers Evan Wilmes and Adam Vondrak and safety Aldwin Foster-Rettig were Northwest players who earned honorable mention honors.
