Coaches, Media Pick Northwest to Repeat

Northwest 2009 Prospectus (.pdf)

KANSAS CITY, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State, the national runner-up the last four seasons, has been picked to win its fourth consecutive MIAA championship by the league's head coaches and media as announced Monday during the league's media day at the Marriott Hotel.

The Bearcats have been predicted to win the conference crown for the fourth year in a row and for the fifth time in seven seasons. Northwest has proven the coaches right each time, tying for the title in 2003 and winning it outright with unblemished marks the past three seasons.

Northwest has won the MIAA championship 10 times in the last 13 seasons. The Bearcats have won 28 straight conference contests and have 31 straight wins against MIAA opponents dating back to 2005. The team's average margin of victory in those 31 games is better than 24 points.

Northwest received eight of a possible nine first-place votes in the coaches poll (coaches can't vote for their own team) and 42 of 47 first-place votes by the league's media, which conducted a preseason football poll for the first time. The media group consisted of print and television media, radio crews and sports information directors of each institution.

Pittsburg State, the last MIAA team to beat Northwest, is ranked second in both polls and Central Missouri is third. Washburn, Missouri Western and Nebraska-Omaha are 4-5-6 in the coaches poll. Nebraska-Omaha and Washburn switch positions in the media poll.

Five MIAA teams - Missouri Western, Nebraska-Omaha, Northwest, Central Missouri and Emporia State - begin their 2009 campaigns Aug. 27. The Bearcats open at Abilene Christian and at Southwest Baptist (9/3) before opening MIAA play against Pittsburg State at Arrowhead Stadium Sept. 12.
