MARYVILLE, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State seniors-to-be Abe Qaoud, Myles Burnsides, Sean Paddock and LaRon Council have been named 2009 team captains as selected by their teammates. Each will begin their fifth season with the Bearcat program.

Qaoud, Burnsides and Paddock have played in all 44 Northwest games the last three seasons. Council, Burnsides and Paddock are returning All-Americans and Burnsides was named the 2008 national defensive player of the year.

In addition to their on-field performances, Burnsides and Paddock received recognition for their work in the classroom. Burnsides was named an academic All-American by CoSIDA and Paddock was a first-team academic all-district choice.

A safety, Burnsides was the Bearcats' third-leading tackler in 2008 with 71. He led the MIAA with six interceptions, which he returned for 171 yards. He broke up five passes, forced a fumble and blocked a kick.

Paddock led the team with 13.5 tackles-for-loss and finished fourth in the MIAA with six sacks from his defensive end position. His 55 tackles ranked sixth on the team. He also forced three fumbles, recovered four and blocked a kick.

Qaoud was the Bearcats' second-leading receiver in 2008, catching 48 passes for 560 yards with five touchdowns. Qaoud enters 2009 two catches shy of 100 for his career with 1,212 yards receiving and eight scores.

Council led the nation with 36 touchdowns while his 1,739 yards rushing ranked third. He scored in 14 consecutive games leading up to the championship game and four times rushed for four scores. Council had eight 100-yard efforts, including a career-high 197 yards in the Bearcats' regular-season finale against Missouri Southern.

Like the preceding class, this year's senior class has made the trip to Florence, Ala., in every season in which they've played. They've won three MIAA championships, 28 straight games in conference play and 31 consecutive games against MIAA opponents.

The Bearcats open their 2009 campaign August 27 at Abilene Christian.
