Three Earn Academic All-District Honors


MARYVILLE, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State student-athletes Myles Burnsides, Sean Paddock and Matt Nelson have been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VII Football Team announced Thursday by College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

All three are repeat selections from a year ago. Burnsides and Paddock are first-team picks and as a result are nominees for the Academic All-America team. Nelson earned second-team honors.

Burnsides, a junior safety from Maryville, Mo., leads the Bearcats with three interceptions and his 42 tackles this season are tied for third. He's started all 10 games this season, has 2.5 tackles-for-loss and blocked a punt on homecoming against Fort Hays State.

Burnsides maintains a 3.88 grade point average and is majoring in business management with a minor in marketing.

Paddock, a junior defensive lineman from Bettendorf, Iowa, and a first-team pick in 2007, has a 3.53 grade point average. He's also majoring in business management with a minor in marketing.

Paddock leads Northwest and ranks eighth in the MIAA with 8.5 tackles-for-loss. His four sacks are tied for the second-highest tally on the team. He also has 34 tackles, four recovered fumbles, a forced fumble and a blocked kick. Only one player in the nation has recovered more fumbles than Paddock has this season.

Nelson, a senior center from Maryville, will make his 40th consecutive start Saturday at Missouri Southern. Nelson leads a unit which ranks seventh in the nation in scoring and ninth in total offense. Northwest has allowed 11 sacks in 10 games, a 1.1 average that ranks 16th in DII.

Nelson is a corporate recreation major with a minor in business who holds a 3.56 grade point average.

To be eligible for nomination, student-athletes must have a minimum 3.3 grade point average, be at least a sophomore in academic and athletic standing and have attended his current academic institution for a minimum of one year.
