Press Conference For Arrowhead VII Monday
MARYVILLE, Mo.-A media conference with Northwest Missouri State Head Football Coach Mel Tjeerdsma and Pittsburg State Head Football Coach Chuck Broyles will take place at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 29, in The Big Theater at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Mo. Media need to park in Lot D and enter at gate D1 next to the ticket booth.
The event is a precursor for the Fall Classic at Arrowhead VII, the seventh installment of the Northwest-Pittsburg State rivalry, which will be played at Arrowhead Stadium at 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4.
In addition to the two coaches, Kansas City Chiefs Executive Vice President and COO Denny Thum and Northwest Director of Athletics Dr. Bob Boerigter will be available. Dr. Boerigter was the initiator in setting up the inaugural "Clash of Champions" in 2002.
Northwest and Pittsburg State have combined to win outright or share the MIAA title in 17 of the last 19 seasons dating back to 1989 when PSU joined the conference. The Bearcats have won nine league championships - seven outright - in the last 12 seasons. The Gorillas have won 10 championships - eight outright - since 1989.
Pittsburg State has advanced to the NCAA Division II playoffs in 14 of the last 18 years while Northwest has advanced in 10 of the last 12. The Bearcats won back-to-back national championships in 1998 and 1999 and have been the national runner-up the past three seasons. The Gorillas won it all in 1991 and placed second in 1992, 1995 and 2004.
Broyles and Tjeerdsma are the two winningest head coaches in MIAA history with 187 and 148 victories, respectively. No other MIAA coach, past or present, has more than 100.
Broyles has the highest career-win percentage among active Division II head coaches (.825, 187-39-2) and the second-highest percentage overall (.844, Jake Gaither, Florida A&M). Tjeerdsma has the fourth-most wins among active Division II head coaches (207-77-4) and the 10th most wins overall. Tjeerdsma (22) and Broyles (18) currently rank 1-2 in Division II postseason wins.
The two teams have both been nationally ranked in 13 of the last 14 meetings and both are currently ranked in the top 10. Pittsburg State (5-0, 3-0 MIAA) is No. 7 in the latest AFCA Coaches' Poll (Sept. 23). Northwest (4-1, 3-0 MIAA) is No. 8.
Tickets for the game are $20 for adults; $10 for students (high school aged and younger) and for Northwest and Pittsburg State students with a valid college ID; or $25 for club level seats (Adults and Students). New in 2008, a family of four (two adults, two children), can purchase a family package for $50.
