One Final Battle of the Bearcats

Game Notes (.pdf)

MARYVILLE , Mo.-Northwest Missouri State will host Southwest Baptist at 6 p.m. Saturday in one last Battle of the Bearcats at Bearcat Stadium. Both teams are searching for their first victory of the 2008 season.

Northwest and SBU have met in every regular season since 1988, but that streak will come to an end in 2009. Southwest Baptist was granted independent status this year by the MIAA and is playing an independent schedule starting this season.

The purple Bearcats from Bolivar, Mo., went winless in 2007 and have lost 17 consecutive games since the middle of 2006. The team is 1-22 dating back to the start of the 2006 season.

Included in the string of losses was an 86-13 drubbing at the hands of Northwest last season. The green Bearcats set program records for points scored in a quarter (36), half (56) and game and held SBU to minus-74 yards rushing - an MIAA record.

Northwest, ranked 12th in this week's AFCA poll, leads the all-time series against SBU 17-3 and has won 13 consecutive meetings by an average of 39 points.

Southwest Baptist was six minutes from snapping its string of losses a week. The Bearcats led Southeast Missouri State 28-18 in the fourth quarter, but the Redhawks rallied to force overtime and pulled out a 35-28 win in overtime.

Jeff Finnell ran for more than 100 yards and quarterback Steve Gachette passed for close to 300 for SBU, but four interceptions and a fumble prevented the Bearcats from securing the win.

Northwest, meanwhile, saw then-No. 8 Abilene Christian rattle off 30 unanswered points to snap the Bearcats' 17-game home win streak. Joel Osborn passed for a collegiate- best 325 yards and two scores. One was a 23-yard strike to Kendall Wright, who had eight catches for 123 yards.

Northwest didn't have a 300-yard passer or a 100-yard receiver in the 14 games of 2007.

The green Bearcats haven't lost back-to-back games in the regular season since 2001 and haven't started 0-2 since 1995. Northwest has scored more than 50 points in seven of its last 13 games against SBU.
