Bearcats Ranked Third in First AFCA Poll
WACO, Texas-Northwest Missouri State football is ranked third in the 2008 preseason American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division II Coaches' Poll announced Tuesday.
The Bearcats received one first place vote and trailed No. 2 Grand Valley State by 12 points. Valdosta State, the defending national champions, earned the top spot after receiving 17 of 26 first-place votes.
Maryville, Mo., and Bearcat Stadium will host the season's first matchup of top-10 teams as Abilene Christian is ranked eighth. The Bearcats and Wildcats kickoff Aug. 30.
MIAA newcomer Nebraska-Omaha is No. 7. Pittsburg State falls in at No. 17. Washburn, Missouri Western and Central Missouri are each receiving votes.
Northwest is ranked in the preseason coaches' poll for the 12th consecutive season. It's the 10th time the Bearcats will start in the top 10 and sixth time the team is ranked in the top five.
Northwest started and finished as the second-ranked team in each of the last two seasons. The Bearcats fell to No. 11 after their season-opening loss at Nebraska-Omaha last year before climbing back to No. 2.
Northwest has been ranked every week in the AFCA poll since the start of the 2004 season.
