KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Northwest Missouri State, the 2005, 2006 and 2007 national runner-up, has been picked to win its third consecutive MIAA crown by the league's head coaches as announced today during the league's kickoff luncheon at the Arrowhead Club inside Arrowhead Stadium.

The Bearcats have been predicted to win the conference for the third year in a row and for the fourth time in six seasons. Northwest has went on to prove the coaches right all three times, tying for the title in 2003 and winning it outright with unblemished marks the past two seasons.

New for the MIAA in 2008 is the addition of Nebraska-Omaha and the subtraction of Southwest Baptist. The Mavericks of Omaha were 10-0 last year before losing to Central Washington in the first round of the NCAA playoffs.

Northwest picked up six first-place votes and totaled 76 points. Nebraska-Omaha had three first-place votes and totaled 73 points. The final first-place vote went to Pittsburg State, which placed third in the tally with 64 points. Washburn (55), which placed second in the MIAA in 2007, and Missouri Western (51), which tied for third and played in the Mineral Water Bowl, rounded out the top five.

Five MIAA teams - Missouri Western, Washburn, Central Missouri, Fort Hays State and Truman - begin their 2008 campaigns Aug. 28. Northwest opens its season at home against Abilene Christian Aug. 30.
