Football Announces 2008 Team Captains

MARYVILLE, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State seniors-to-be Brandon Clayton, Joel Osborn, Reid Kirby, Matt Nelson and Jeremy Davis and junior-to-be Myles Burnsides have been named 2008 team captains as selected by their teammates.

Northwest returns four of five offensive linemen from a unit that started all 14 games last season, paved the way for the nation's leading rusher and allowed 12 sacks, which ranked seventh nationally. All four will be seniors this fall and three have been selected captains.

Kirby, a left tackle, and Davis, a right guard, were first-team All-Americans a year ago. Nelson serves as center. Tom Pestock, the fourth senior returning to the line, flanks Nelson at left guard.

Osborn started half the team's games at quarterback last season, but played in all 14. He took nearly every snap during the team's run through the playoffs where he averaged 224 yards, completed 65 percent of his passes and threw for three scores. He passed for 11 touchdowns in all and finished 18 passing yards shy of 2,000.

Defensive backs Clayton and Burnsides tied for the team lead in interceptions last year.

Burnsides was a first-team All-MIAA pick and second-team all-region selection. He finished third on the team with 85 tackles. He had 31 in the postseason, second to Matt Robertson's 38.

Clayton, an all-conference performer in 2006, had 33 tackles, 22 solo, to go with two picks, a sack and six passes defended in 2007. He made 28 consecutive starts before sitting out the national championship with an injury. Clayton has four picks and has defended 19 passes in his three-year career.

This year's senior class has made the trip to Florence, Ala., in every season in which they've played. They've won 21 consecutive MIAA contests and have won back-to-back league championships.

The Bearcats open their 2008 campaign at home against Abilene Christian Aug. 30.
