Four More Sign in 2008 Football Recruiting Class
MARYVILLE, Mo. — Four additional student–athletes will join the Northwest Missouri State football program as announced by head football coach Mel Tjeerdsma. Northeastern Oklahoma A&M-transfer Jayson Bates, Nathan "Ty" Burtnett (Springtown, Tx.), Bakersfield College-transfer Mark Johnson and Jordan Simmons (Kansas City, Mo.) have chosen to don the green and white.
This group of student-athletes brings the 2008 Northwest recruiting class to 30. See below for information on each individual:
- NATHAN ‘TY’ BURTNETT (Springtown, Texas) – Defensive Lineman, 6-1, 215 lbs.
High School: Springtown Head Coach: Brad Turner Parents: James and Kay Burtnett
Notes: academic all-district selection in 2006 and 2007 ... 2007 team captain ... also threw shot and discus in track and field ... was a regional qualifier in wrestling where he finished with a record of 36-6
Coach Tjeerdsma: "Ty plays with very good technique. He came from a good high school program and is really well coached. He has a good burst off the edge and should be a great pass rusher. He was also an outstanding wrestler in Texas at 215 pounds."
- JAYSON BATES (Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College) – Linebacker, 6-1, 235 lbs.
High School: Alva High School Head Coach: Steve Gale (AHS); Rob Green (NEO)
Parents: Sonny & Rae Bates
Notes: Oklahoma all-state honoree ... district defensive player of the year ... named a Class 2A All-Star ... had 121 tackles, eight for loss, and six sacks as a sophomore at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College
Coach Tjeerdsma: "Jayson was the starting linebacker at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M and we're excited to have a guy with two years of playing experience. He's a quality individual who comes from a good family and has a strong work ethic. It will take him awhile to learn our system, but we're looking for him to come in and play right away."
- MARK JOHNSON (Bakersfield College) – Defensive End, 6-1, 245 lbs.
High School: High Tower Head Coach (Bakersfield): Jeff Chudy Parents: Emmitt and Lillian Johnson
Notes: three-time first-team all-conference selection ... named team’s Most Valuable Player in 2003
Coach Tjeerdsma: "Mark played high school ball in Texas and is a transfer from Bakersfield. He's a very good pass rusher with great speed off the edge. With as many teams in our league that throw the ball, he could be a great addition as far as our defensive line is concerned."
- JORDAN SIMMONS (Kansas City, Mo.) – Athlete, 5-9, 185 lbs.
High School: Lee's Summit North Head Coach: Harold Wambsgans
Parents: Floyd & Frankcine Simmons
Notes: second-team all-state running back ... earned first-team all-district and all-conference honors ... runs a 10.9 100-meter dash and a 22.3 200-meter dash ... carried 28 times for 240 yards and five touchdowns for Lee’s Summit North in 2007
Coach Tjeerdsma: "Jordan was a high school student-athlete who had a great senior year. He's an outstanding athlete, a great running back and a solid cornerback. We're not quite sure where he'll fit yet, but he's a good late addition. He's also an outstanding track man, who earned a state championship."
