Omon Named a Regional Finalist For Harlon Hill Trophy
FLORENCE, Ala.-Northwest Missouri State senior running back Xavier Omon has been named one of six regional finalists and one of 24 national finalists for the 2007 Harlon Hill Trophy, the award given to the NCAA Division II College Football Player of the Year. This is the second year in a row that Omon has been selected as a regional finalist.
Players are nominated and voted on by the sports information directors at the 150 NCAA Division II football-playing-institutions. The top two leading vote-getters in each of the four regions will advance to the national ballot. The full list of candidates from the Southwest Region can be found below:
Xavier Omon RB Sr. Northwest Missouri State
Ashton Gronewold WR Sr. Missouri-Rolla
Keith Null QB Jr. West Texas A&M
Daniel Polk QB Sr. Midwestern State
Bernard Scott RB Jr. Abilene Christian
Danny Woodhead RB Sr. Chadron State
The 22nd Harlon Hill Trophy will be presented Dec. 14 on the eve of the Division II National Championship Game in Florence. Woodhead was the 2006 winner of the award.
Omon needs 17 yards to become the first player in NCAA history to rush for 1,500 yards in four seasons. He's the third leading rusher and third leading scorer in the nation heading into this weekend's games, averaging 164.8 yards and 16 points, respectively.
Omon is the 11th player in Division II history to rush for 6,000 yards and the fifth player to score 500 points. He holds 25 school records including nearly every career, regular season and postseason rushing and scoring mark.
Northwest (8-1, 8-0 MIAA) is currently ranked fifth in the nation by two publications and second in the NCAA Southwest Region rankings. The Bearcats have clinched their ninth MIAA championship in the last 12 seasons and will likely secure a first-round bye in the postseason with a win against Missouri Southern Saturday at Bearcat Stadium.
