Press Conference Set for Fall Classic at Arrowhead VI

MARYVILLE, Mo. - (PDF) A media conference with Northwest Missouri State Head Football Coach Mel Tjeerdsma and Pittsburg State Head Football Coach Chuck Broyles will take place at 11:15 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, in The Big Theater at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Mo. Media need to enter Arrowhead Stadium at Gate E for check-in.

The event is a precursor for the Fall Classic at Arrowhead VI, the sixth installment of the Northwest-Pittsburg State rivalry, which will be played at Arrowhead Stadium at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6.

The media session will precede Kansas City Chiefs Head Football Coach Herm Edwards' weekly press conference. The Chiefs host the Jacksonville Jaguars Sunday as part of the Ultimate Football Weekend at Arrowhead.

In addition to the two coaches, Kansas Chiefs President/General Manager and CEO Dr. Carl Peterson and Northwest Director of Athletics Dr. Bob Boerigter will be available. Dr. Boerigter was the initiator in setting up the inaugural "Clash of Champions" in 2002.

Northwest and Pittsburg State have combined to win outright or share the MIAA title in 16 of the last 18 seasons dating back to 1989. PSU has advanced to the NCAA Division II playoffs in 14 of the last 17 years. Northwest has qualifi ed in nine of the last 11.

Broyles and Tjeerdsma are the two winningest head coaches in MIAA history with 177 and 134 victories, respectively. Broyles led PSU to a national title in 1991 and second-place fi nishes in 1992, 1995 and 2004. Tjeerdsma guided the Bearcats to back-to-back national championships in 1998-99 and has been the national runner-up the last two seasons.

The two teams have both been nationally ranked in 12 of the last 13 meetings. Northwest (2-1, 2-0 MIAA) is currently No. 10 in the AFCA Coaches' Poll (Sept. 24). Pittsburg State (3-1, 1-1 MIAA) is No. 19.

Tickets for the game are $20 for adults; $10 for students (high school aged and younger) and for Northwest and Pitt State students with a valid college ID; or $25 for club level seats (Adults and Students).
