Northwest Football Picked To Win MIAA Crown

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Northwest Missouri State, the 2005 and 2006 national runner-up, has been picked to defend its MIAA crown in the 2007 preseason football coaches poll announced today during the league's kickoff luncheon at the Arrowhead Club.

The Bearcats picked up all nine available first-place votes to collect 81 points in the poll (coaches are not allowed to vote for their own teams). Pittsburg State was picked to finish second and received 71 points. Washburn (59), Central Missouri (55) and Missouri Western (53) rounded out the top five. Washburn received one first-place vote.

This is the second year in a row the Bearcats have been picked to win the conference and the third time in the last five years. Northwest tied for the league championship in 2003 and went on to win the title outright in 2006. The Bearcats were predicted to win the title both seasons.

Northwest and Pittsburg State have been selected as the top two teams in each of the last three seasons. Pittsburg State and Missouri Western tied for second place in 2006.

The season begins Aug. 23 when Central Missouri travels to Minnesota State Mankato and Northwest hosts Arkansas Tech (7:30 p.m.). The 2007 MIAA schedule begins Sept. 15.
