Field Dedication Set for Aug. 23

Mel Tjeerdsma

MARYVILLE - The dedication of Mel Tjeerdsma Field will be held Aug. 23 at Bearcat Stadium in a ceremony prior to Northwest Missouri State's season-opening football contest with Arkansas Tech. That game is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. with gates to open at 6 p.m.

The Northwest Board of Regents approved the naming of the newly renovated playing surface at Bearcat Stadium on June 28. The renovations include the installation of FieldTurf, an elite synthetic turf, and lights provided by MUSCO Lighting. University alumni and friends through the Northwest Foundation provided funds for the renovation.

With 132 wins, 14th-year head coach Mel Tjeerdsma is the winningest football coach in Northwest history. He led the Bearcats to back-to-back national championships in 1998 and 1999 and back-to-back second-place finishes in 2005 and 2006. His 19 postseason victories are the most among active Division II coaches.
