Tjeerdsma Selected to Coach in Inaugural Texas vs. The Nation All-Star Game

EL PASO, Texas - Northwest Missouri State head football coach Mel Tjeerdsma has been selected to be part of the coaching staff in the First Annual Texas vs. The Nation All-Star Challenge game held on Friday, Feb. 2, in El Paso, Texas. Tjeerdsma will serve as an assistant for the Texas team under Mike Price, the head football coach at the University of Texas-El Paso. Former Philadelphia Eagles head coach Buddy Ryan will coach the Nation team.

"I'm excited about it," Tjeerdsma said. "This is the first year for it and I'm looking forward to coaching with Mike Price. It'll be a good time." Tjeerdsma said he expects to take on the role of offensive coordinator for the game.

Coaches and players selected for the Texas team must have high school or collegiate ties to the state for inclusion on the team. Players must have completed their senior season, and be selected based on their collegiate performances, NFL draft eligibility and recommendations from coaches. Two players from the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association were each selected to the Texas and Nation squads. A full roster can be found at

Tjeerdsma served as the head football coach at Austin College in Sherman, Texas from 1984-93 prior to accepting the coaching responsibilities at Northwest. At Austin, Tjeerdsma compiled a 60-38-4 record, becoming the school's winningest coach. He won three Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association Championships and made two trips to the NAIA Division II Playoffs. He earned TIAA Coach of the Year honors three times, and coached 16 First and Second Team All-America selections and 11 Academic All-America honorees.

The Texas vs. the Nation game will be broadcast live on CSTV. Kickoff is set for 9 p.m. CST from the Sun Bowl.
