Peterson Named to Little AP All-America Team

MARYVILLE - Northwest Missouri State junior tight end Mike Peterson (Atlantic, Iowa) was named a 2006 Little Associated Press (AP) All-America Second-Team pick as a tight end, announced late last week. This award is Peterson's first of his career and is voted on by members of the national media and given to players in Division II and Division III.

Peterson, who now holds six different individual honors in 2006 after capturing American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) All-America honors last week, is a two-time All-Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) honoree who tied for first on the team with five touchdown receptions, third with 38 catches and fourth with 536 receiving yards. This season, he hauled in two touchdowns against Washburn on Oct. 14 and caught a season-high six receptions in the NCAA quarterfinal matchup against Midwestern State.

Besides being a threat in the passing game as he has hit for 50 yards-plus in four games, Peterson has 32 rushing yards and one touchdown.

Peterson follows in the footsteps of Dave Tollefson as the last Bearcat to be honored on the Little AP All-America team in 2005. Tollefson went on to get drafted by the Green Bay Packers. The 2006 award for Peterson keeps alive a streak of five straight seasons in which a Bearcat has been recognized.

The Bearcat football team ended its season with a 17-14 loss to No. 1 Grand Valley State in the NCAA Division II National Championship last Saturday. Northwest finished 14-1 overall and had its second 14-win season in history (1998 season was 15-0).
