Peterson Notches All-America Status on AFCA Coaches' Team
WACO, Texas - Northwest Missouri State junior tight end Mike Peterson (Atlantic, Iowa) notched 2006 American Football Coaches' Association (AFCA) Division II Coaches' All-America honors, announced today by the national coaches' governing body of all divisions. Peterson made the Offensive Team as a tight end and this is his first such award. The complete AFCA All-America Team is listed at www.afca.com.
Peterson, who was tabbed on the 2006 Daktronics All-America First Team yesterday (Dec. 12), is a two-time All-Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) team honoree who ranks third on the team with 497 receiving yards. In the 2005 NCAA tile game, he recorded the fifth-best national championship receiving yardage mark with 150 yards on nine receptions. This season, he hauled in two touchdowns against Washburn on Oct. 14 and caught a season-high six receptions in the NCAA quarterfinal matchup against Midwestern State.
Besides being a threat in the passing game as he has hit for 50 yards-plus in four games, Peterson has 32 rushing yards and one touchdown.
Peterson follows in the footsteps of Dave Tollefson as the last Bearcat to be honored on the AFCA team in 2005. Tollefson went on to get drafted by the Green Bay Packers. The 2006 award for Peterson keeps alive a streak of 11 straight seasons in which a Bearcat has been honored on the only All-America Team voted on by coaches.
The Bearcat football team will travel to Florence, Ala., this weekend to compete in the NCAA Division II National Championship game against Grand Valley State. Kick-off is set for 11 a.m. CST on Dec. 16 with ESPN2 providing the nationwide television broadcast.
