Three Bearcats Honored on Daktronics All-America Team

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Three Northwest Missouri State football students-athletes were selected to the 2006 Daktronics Division II All-America football team, announced today by the national panel of sports information directors. Junior tight end Mike Peterson (Atlantic, Iowa) and junior offensive lineman Reid Kirby (Gladstone, Mo.) earned first-team honors while senior linebacker Thomas Smith (Denver, Colo.) was mentioned on the second team. This is the 14th year for the Daktronics All-America team.

Peterson is a two-time All-Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) team honoree who ranks third on the team with 497 receiving yards. In the 2005 NCAA tile game, he recorded the fifth-best national championship receiving yardage mark with 150 yards on nine receptions. This season, he hauled in two touchdowns against Washburn on Oct. 14 and caught a season-high six receptions in the NCAA quarterfinal matchup against Midwestern State.

A starter in 14 games at left tackle, Kirby was named to the MIAA First Team this season. He has helped the Bearcat offense into the top-10 nationwide in total offense (10th) and scoring offense (7th) in statistics through the semifinals.

Smith is in his first year at Northwest after transferring from the University of Northern Colorado. He currently leads the team in tackles with 82 and has accumulated two forced fumbles and six tackles for loss during the season. Smith earned MIAA Defensive Player of the Week honors on Sept. 11 after posting 12 tackles against No. 10 Nebraska-Omaha on Sept. 9. Smith was also named to the first team All-MIAA team on defense. Smith and the rest of the defense currently rank in the top-10 nationwide for total defense (9th), rushing defense (4th) and scoring defense (2nd).

The Bearcat football team will travel to Florence, Ala., this weekend to compete in the NCAA Division II National Championship game against Grand Valley State. Kick-off is set for 11 a.m. CST on Dec. 16 with ESPN2 providing the nationwide television broadcast.
