Calbert Named MIAA Special Teams Player of the Week
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. --- Northwest Missouri State senior defensive back Diezeas Calbert (Omaha, Neb.) has been named the MIAA Special Teams Player of the Week, announced late today (Nov. 13) by the MIAA offices. Calbert is the third straight Bearcat to win a league weekly honor and sixth overall in 2006. The recognition is the first in the career for Calbert.
Calbert, a 5-foot-8, 185-pound senior from Omaha, Neb., blocked two kicks, recovered a muffed punt and had four special teams tackles in No. 2 Northwest's 55-9 win at Southwest Baptist Saturday (Nov. 11). He blocked a punt concluding SBU's first possession, and deflected a field goal try late in the first half. Calbert is the first Northwest player since 1998 to record two kick blocks in one game. Calbert's recovery of a muffed punt at the SBU 10-yard line led to the green Bearcats' third TD of the day. The Creighton Prep High School graduate leads the team this season with three blocked kicks.
The six MIAA awards this season for Northwest is the most since the team placed seven players on the list back in 2004.
Calbert and the Bearcats have a first-round bye in the NCAA Division II playoffs with the No. 1 seed in the Southwest Region. Northwest will take on the winner of the Midwestern (Tex.) State / Missouri Western game in the second round on Nov. 25 at 12 p.m. CST from Bearcat Stadium.
