Xavier Omon Named Harlon Hill Regional Finalist
FLORENCE, Ala. - Northwest Missouri State junior running back Xavier Omon was named one of six regional finalists for the 2006 Harlon Hill Trophy, the award given to the NCAA Division II College Football Player of the Year. He is the first regional finalist from Northwest since Jamaica Rector was named to the regional ballot in 2004. The announcement was made today by the National Harlon Hill Awards Committee.
Players are nominated and voted on by the sports information directors of all Division II football-playing institutions. The top two players in voting from each of the four regions advance to the national ballot when regional voting concludes on Nov. 17. The 21st annual Harlon Hill Trophy will be presented on Dec. 15 on the eve of the Division II National Championship Game in Florence, Ala.
The other regional finalists in the Southwest Region are: West Texas A&M quarterback Dalton Bell, Central Missouri quarterback Toby Korrodi, Abilene Christian quarterback Billy Malone, Pittsburg State tailback Germaine Race, and Chadron State tailback Danny Woodhead.
Omon holds Northwest career all-games records in rushing yards (4,200), rushing touchdowns (49) and total touchdowns (53). He stands eighth in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) records for career rushing. Omon tied the school single-game record in rushing touchdowns with four against Emporia State on Oct. 7 this season, and ran for a season-high 166 yards on 23 carries against Central Missouri on Oct. 28 in two-plus quarters of play.
Omon has been sidelined the last two games with a rib injury - he is expected back for the NCAA Second Round Game on Nov. 25.
Northwest notched the No. 1 seed in the Southwest Region, earning a bye this week in the NCAA Division II playoffs. The Bearcats are scheduled to play the winner of the Midwestern State (Texas) and Missouri Western game on Nov. 25 in Maryville, Mo.
