Wright Earns First Career MIAA Weekly Football Honor
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Northwest Missouri State sophomore punt returner / wide receiver Kendall Wright (Sulphur Springs, Tex.) has been honored with the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) Special Teams Player of the Week, announced late today by the MIAA offices. In the 24-7 Northwest win at Missouri Southern last Saturday, Wright found the endzone on his first punt return, at the 13:16 mark of the second quarter, and returned it 68 yards for a touchdown. It was the first return for a score sine Morris White did so versus Minnesota State-Moorhead on Aug. 28, 2004.
Wright becomes the third Bearcat this season to receive the honor following in the footsteps of Thomas Smith (defense) and Tommy Frevert (special teams) last week.
Wright added 20 receiving yards on four catches and ended his day with 98 all-purpose yards (3 punt returns for 78 yards). He currently (Oct. 2) stands 34th in the NCAA rankings for punt return average (11.6.
On the year, Wright leads the club in receiving yardage (381) and catches (25).
Northwest, who stands 5-0 on the season and ranked No. 2 in the AFCA poll (Sept. 26), returns home for a 1 p.m. tilt against Emporia State this Saturday at Bearcat Stadium. ESU dropped a 59-57, 4 overtime decision last Saturday to #13 Pittsburg State.
