KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Northwest Missouri State, the 2005 NCAA Division II national runner-up, is the choice as the team to beat in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association preseason football coaches poll.

The survey was announced Monday (July 31) during the 2006 MIAA Football Kickoff Luncheon at the Arrowhead Club.

The Bearcats, winners of four consecutive road playoff games before falling in the national final, picked up five of a possible nine first-place votes (coaches are not allowed to vote for their own teams), and collected 75 of a possible 81 points in the poll.

Four other teams received first-place votes. National quarterfinalist Pittsburg State was second with 68 points and one first-place vote, while defending MIAA champion Washburn had 63 points with one first-place vote.

Central Missouri State was the only school other than Northwest to get more than one first-place vote, finishing fourth in the poll with 60 points and two top nods. Mineral Water Bowl champion Missouri Western right behind with the other first-place vote.

Emporia State starts the second five, followed by Missouri Southern (with a new coach, longtime Northwest assistant Bart Tatum, at the helm). Truman edged MIAA newcomer Fort Hays State for eighth place, while Southwest Baptist rounded out the list.

The season begins on Aug. 24 when Truman travels to Minnesota State-Mankato. The 2006 conference season commences on Sept. 16.
