SAN FRANCISCO -- Former Northwest Missouri State place-kicker Luis Berlanga (Monterrey, Mexico) signed a free agent contract with the National Football League's San Francisco 49ers, announced today by the 49ers organization. Berlanga was the place-kicker at Northwest for one season (2004). The 5-9, 190 lb., pro had spent time in the Arena Football League with the Columbus Destroyer's practice squad.
During his season as a Bearcat, Berlanga set the NCAA all-division's (I-A, I-AA, II, III) single-season record for consecutive PATs made with 73. The Daktronics First Team All-Southwest Region pick set a school standard in a season for points by a kicker (122), field goals (16) and PATs (76). Berlanga also set a then-MIAA record with an 11-for-11 effort on PATs against Minnesota State-Moorhead on August 28, 2004.
Berlanga is widely considered as one of the best field goal kickers in Mexican history. He has played in the Cactus Bowl, Aztec Bowl and the Mexico All-Stars vs. Division III All Stars game.
