Berlanga Signs With Columbus Destroyers; 2004 Graduate is Reserve Placekicker on Arena Football Team
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Former Northwest Missouri State placekicker and current recordholder in several kicking categories,
Luis Berlanga recently signed a professional contract with the Columbus Destroyers. The Destroyers, an Arena League team in its third year of existence in Columbus, picked up Berlanga's contract on Jan. 19. Berlanga is listed on the practice squad.
Berlanga played one season for the Bearcats in 2004 and set the NCAA all-division's (I-A, I-AA, II, III) single season record for consecutive PATs made with 73. The Daktronics First Team All-Southwest Region pick set a school standard in a season for points by a kicker (122), field goals (16) and PATs (76). The 5-9, 180 lb. kicker set a then-MIAA record with an 11-for-11 effort on PATs against Minnesota State-Moorhead on Aug. 28, 2004. The Monterrey, Mexico native won conference Special Teams Player of the Week honors three times.
