Northwest Enters Playoffs With No. 6 Seed
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Northwest Missouri State football will advance to its 10th NCAA Division II playoffs as Northwest earned the No. 6 seed in the Southwest Region bracket, announced today by the NCAA offices. The Bearcats will play at No. 3 seed Angelo (Tex.) State University on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 12 p.m. in the first round of postseason action. The road trip is the sixth such for Northwest in the playoffs but the first away game in the first round since 1996 when Northwest pulled out a 22-21 win at Nebraska-Omaha.
"We are thrilled to be in after everything that happened yesterday in the region," said head coach Mel Tjeerdsma. "We are excited about the opportunity to play. From what I have heard, Angelo State has got great facilities and is a nice place to play."
Northwest has gone to the playoffs in eight of the last 10 seasons and overall in 19 playoff contests, holds a 12-7 record. The Bearcats stand 8-3 at home, 2-4 on the road and 2-0 in neutral territory (National Championship wins in 1998 & 1999.) The two wins on the road was at Omaha in 1996 and at Northern Colorado (41-35) on Nov. 27, 1999.
The Bearcats defeated Texas A&M-Kingsville 34-14 last season in the second round of the playoffs before getting dropped 50-36 at Pittsburg State in the quarterfinals. The Bearcats held the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye.
Information on ticket prices for this game will not be available until NOON on Monday at which time ticket orders will be taken at the Northwest Student Services Desk or by calling 562-1212. Please note that Northwest officials will not receive physical tickets until Tuesday. Because of the short turn around time on getting physical tickets, no tickets will be mailed. Fans who are unable to pickup their tickets can get them at the Angelo State will-call window the day of the game.
In other regional games, No. 5 Pittsburg State travels to No. 4 Nebraska-Kearney, the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference representative, on Saturday. The No. 1 seed West Texas A&M will host the Pitt State / UN-Kearney winner on Nov. 19 while Washburn, the No. 2 seed, hosts the Northwest / Angelo winner in the second round. It is the first time in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) history that three conference schools have advanced to the NCAA playoffs.
