Northwest Ranked No. 3 in First Regional Polls

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Northwest Missouri State football sits No. 3 in the first edition of the NCAA Division II Southwest regional ranking, announced today by the NCAA Division II Football Committee. Northwest looks up at No. 1 West Texas A&M, who has a perfect 6-0 mark, and this week's opponent Washburn at No. 2. Washburn upset then-No. 4 Pittsburg State last Saturday 35-34 in overtime to snap a 25-game losing streak to the Gorillas and push its season mark to 5-1 and 3-0 in league play.

The Bearcats and Ichabods face each other as the only unbeatens in league play as Northwest holds a .5 game edge with a 4-0 MIAA record. Kick-off from Bearcat Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Northwest held down the No. 2 spot in the final regional poll last season and hosted a second-round game versus Texas A&M-Kingsville - a 34-14 win.

Earned access to the NCAA playoffs can be gained by a conference if a conference representative finishes in the top 10 of the final regional rankings. There are three conferences competing for six post-season spots, the Mid America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA), the Lone Star Conference (LSC) and the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC). For instance, if one of those conference schools is at No. 7 in the final rankings, that school would replace whatever school is No. 6 so that there would be at least one representative from each conference in the playoffs. The top two seeds receive a bye in the first round and home-field through the regional games.
