Football Tabbed Fifth in AFCA Top 25 Poll

WACO, Texas -- The Northwest Missouri State football team was picked fifth in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division II Coaches' Poll, released today by the Division II Board of Coaches. Yesterday, Northwest was mentioned fifth on the 2005 D2Football.com Top 25 Poll and earlier in the preseason, Northwest was selected sixth in the 2005 Street & Smith's Preseason Top 25 Poll.

2004 national champion Valdosta State received 19 first-place votes and retained the No. 1 spot to begin the 2005 campaign. 2004 MIAA champion Pittsburg State sits No. 2 while Grand Valley State is No. 3 and Texas A&M-Kingsville is No. 4.

Northwest faces Pittsburg State in the Fall Classic IV at Arrowhead on Oct. 29 at 2 p.m. The Bearcats take on another Top 25 team in No. 8 Nebraska-Omaha on Sept. 3 at 6 p.m. in Omaha. Central Missouri State had 51 votes and will take on Northwest Oct. 22 in the Bearcat Homecoming.

The last time Northwest earned a higher ranking to open up the season was 2003 when it was No. 4.

For a complete AFCA Top 25 poll, please visit www.afca.com. The Division II Board of Coaches is made up of 25 AFCA-member head coaches from NCAA Division II schools around the country. The Board will vote on the Top 25 each Sunday with the polls released the following Tuesday.

The Bearcats kick-off the 2005 season at Minnesota State on Thursday, Aug. 25. The Mavericks earned one nod from the voting panel.
