Football Earns Fifth Spot in Top 25 Poll

MARYVILLE, Mo. -- The Northwest Missouri State football team was tabbed fifth in the 2005 Top 25 Poll, announced today. The national poll is voted on by members of the Media Voting Panel. Also, senior defensive tackle Steve Williams (Bolingbrook, Ill.) picked up his fourth preseason award as he was mentioned on the 2005 Preseason All-America First Team Defense as a defensive lineman.

Northwest was selected sixth in the 2005 Street & Smith's Preseason Top 25 Poll. The American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Top 25 poll will be announced tomorrow (Tuesday).

Pittsburg State was picked by the panel as the No. 1 preseason selection after they went to the national championship game in 2004. Northwest faces Pittsburg State in the Fall Classic IV at Arrowhead on Oct. 29 at 2 p.m. The Bearcats face another Top 25 team in No. 11 Nebraska-Omaha on Sept. 3 at 6 p.m. in Omaha.

Williams, a 2005 team captain, was the only unanimous pick on the 2004 All-MIAA Defensive First Team. He totaled 52 tackles, seven tackles-for-a-loss, 1.0 sack and recovered three fumbles last season. Williams picked up his first interception against Pittsburg State in the Fall Classic at Arrowhead, Nov. 6, 2004. The University of Indiana transfer was tabbed on the Daktronics Second Team All-America squad last season. He was an integral member of a defense to set the school record for fewest rushing yards allowed per game (94.0). Earlier in the preseason, Williams was listed on the 2005 Division II Street & Smith's All-America Team on defense and Don Hansen's Football Gazette All-America Team.
