Helms and Rector Set to Play in the NFL

MARYVILLE, Mo. -- Northwest Missouri State football players Gabriel Helms (St. Louis, Mo.) and Jamaica Rector (Celeste, Tex.) have agreed to terms to play in the National Football League, announced today. Helms will be suiting up for the Kansas City Chiefs while Rector inked with the Dallas Cowboys.

"I know that most everyone thought Jamaica would be drafted so it is a little disappointing," said head coach Mel Tjeerdsma. "But, it is an opportunity for him that he is excited about. I think he made a good choice because Dallas didn't take a wide receiver or kick returner in the draft. He is thrilled about getting there and getting started.

"For Gabe, a lot of people thought he wouldn't be drafted but we were hoping he would get an opportunity and he did. This (signing with Kansas City) looked like the best situation for him. Now, it is up to him to be ready to go and make the most of it."

Helms, a 5-11, 210 lb. cornerback at Northwest, was a 2004 All-Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) First Team selection. He saw action in every game despite dislocating his shoulder in Week 10 and compiled 33 total tackles including 24 of the solo variety. He leaves with 88 career tackles and three interceptions including a 70-yard touchdown return vs. MSU-Moorhead (Aug. 28). He ranked first on the team with 10 passes defended and was an integral part of a 2004 defense to rank 10th in the NCAA in rushing defense (94.0) and 26th in turnover margin (0.8). As a defensive unit, Northwest broke the single-season mark for fewest rushing yards allowed per game (85.2).

A model of consistency, Helms appeared in all 36 possible games including 12 as a back-up defensive back and kick returner in 2002. He was selected to play at the 2005 Whataburger Cactus Bowl, which is an elite Division II all-star game in Kingsville, Tex. The three-year player transferred to Northwest in 2002 after spending one season at Florissant Valley Community College.

Rector, a 5-10, 182 lb. wide receiver/kick returner at Northwest, ended his career in numerous record books. Rector finished at No. 2 on the NCAA Division II career list in receiving yards (4,497 yards) and No. 3 in receptions (289). At Northwest, he ranks first in career punt return yardage (1,494), punt returns (112), most yards per kick return (27.8) touchdown receptions (38) and third in career points (270) - his 38 TD's (all games) is first on the MIAA charts.

Rector is the first in reported Northwest history to be a four-time All-MIAA First Team selection. The two-time Harlon Hill finalist was a 2004 Don Hansen's Football Gazette Preseason All-America and D2Football.com 2nd Team All-America pick on offense. An honoree on the Daktronics Division II First Team All-America at all-purpose back, Rector had at least five receptions in 13 of his final 15 games as a senior and at least 1 TD catch in 11 of his last 13. He participated in the Hula Bowl where he led all receivers with 50 yards on four passes. The 2001 MIAA Freshman of the Year has totaled 13 games of 200-plus all-purpose yards.
