Spring Game Ends in 6-6 Tie
MARYVILLE, Mo. - In the inaugural Northwest Missouri State Spring Football Game between the Green Team (Team Bostwick) and the White Team (Team Tatum), the contest ended in a 6-6 tie. This marked the first time in the Mel Tjeerdsma-era (since 1994), that Northwest split into separate "teams" for the Spring Game.
The White Team, named after offensive coordinator Bart Tatum, struck first on a 83-yard pass play from redshirt freshman Joel Osborn to redshirt freshman E.J. Falkner. That play occurred right before the first quarter wrapped up.
The Green Team, named after defensive coordinator Scott Bostwick, answered with a two-play drive in the second quarter on a 46-yard toss from redshirt freshman Kyle Johnson. Johnson connected with redshirt freshman Rapheal Robinson along the right sideline.
Despite some long offensive drives in the second half, neither team could light up the scoreboard. The Green Team had marches of eight plays (59 yards) and 17 plays (97 yards) with the last culminating on a interception at the White 3-yard line.
The White Team had its second half chances as well with a 10-play, 38-yard drive before a eight-play, 13-yard surge which brought the ball to the Green 5. However, a Jeff Netolicky pass fell incomplete.
The low scoring was indicative of how the defense played on both teams. There were a combined 13 sacks and four interceptions. For the White Team, Brandon Clayton nabbed two INT's while Jared Erspamer and Diezeas Calbert each had one for the Green Team.
The Spring Game had no special teams and there were four 12-minute quarters. Junior quarterback Josh Lamberson did not suit up as he is recovering from an injured hip suffered last season.
The Bearcats begin 2005 with a road contest scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 25 at Minnesota State, Mankato. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. from Blakeslee Stadium.
