Steve Williams Earns AFCA Good Works Honor
WACO, Tex. -- Northwest Missouri State University senior defensive tackle Steve Williams (Bolingbrook, Ill.) was selected to the 2005 American Football Coaches Association Good Works Team. A total of 22 student-athletes were chosen with 11 on the Division I-A team and 11 on the Divisions I-AA, II, III and NAIA squad. The Good Works Team honors those for their dedication and commitment to community service. The AFCA began selecting the teams in 1997 after the College Football Association disbanded.
Williams has been a volunteer at Clarinda (Iowa) Academy, a residential foster-care facility for delinquent male and female youth, since 2003. He visits the Academy on a weekly basis and is a supervisor and mentor for the youth. He is involved in a Peer Program there that teaches kids discipline and responsibility. In addition to his work at the Academy, Williams plays games and works various activities with kids at Eugene Field Elementary, picks up trash and rakes leaves at elderly homes in Maryville and helped work at his hometown football camp at Bolingbrook High School.
"What he has done at Clarinda says everything about Steve," said defensive coordinator Scott Bostwick. "The people there said he is great and an awesome role model. He has shown that you can succeed in many different arenas."
Williams has appeared in two games this season as he sat out versus Truman (Sept. 10) with groin injuries. He has totaled 11 tackles and 0.5 sacks on the year.
Candidates have to display sincere concern and reliability, while also having made a favorable impression on the organizations with which they are involved. Athletic ability is not a criteria.
No. 10 Northwest continues action with a 2 p.m. battle at Missouri Western on Saturday, Sept. 17. Williams health status is listed as questionable for Saturday's game.
