Northwest Signs 18 to National Letters of Intent; List Includes Seven Missouri Prep Standouts Including Two From Maryville

MARYVILLE, Mo. -- Northwest Missouri State University head football coach Mel Tjeerdsma announced the signing of 18 high school senior student-athletes to National Letters of Intent today. The list includes players from five states including seven from Missouri, four from Nebraska, three from Iowa and Texas and one from Kansas.

"We are excited about what we have recruited," said Tjeerdsma. "We signed some skilled athletes and like the speed that a few of them possess. I feel like we have addressed most of our needs. There will be a few more to sign in the next few months."

Following is a look at each individual:
• GREG APPLEGATE (Harlan, Iowa) - Wide Receiver, 6-2, 210 lb.
High School: Harlan Community Head Coach: Curt Bladt Parents: George & Jan Applegate Major: Pre-Med
Notes: Named to four newspaper First Team's including the Des Moines Register Class 3A First Team...Led his club to back-to-back state championship in final two seasons...As a senior, had 686 receiving yards on 33 receptions (21 avg.) and caught seven TD's...Compiled 27 carries for 230 rushing yards (8.5 avg.) and five TD's...Had nearly 1,000 receiving yards (991) and went for 12 TD catches as a junior...Held the highest grade point average on the football team...Class 3A scholarship winner for the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame in the Iowa chapter...Current Northwest football player redshirt freshman Joel Osborn was Applegate's quarterback for one season (junior).

• MYLES BURNSIDES (Maryville, Mo.) - Safety, 5-11, 185 lb.
High School: Maryville Head Coach: Paul Miller Parents: Mark & Marla Burnsides Major: Business
Notes: Honored on the Second Team All-State squad as voted on by the media...First Team All-District and All-Conference pick...Ranked first in his academic class.

• JEFF COLTER (Lawrence, Kan.) - Running Back/Defensive Back, 5-8, 165 lb.
High School: Lawrence Head Coach: Dirk Wedd Parents: Jeff & Janine Colter Major: Business Marketing
Notes: Kansas Football Coaches Association All-State honoree at defensive back...First Team All-Class 6A and Kansas City All-Metro Team at defensive back...First Team All-Sunflower League selection at defensive back and Second Team All-Sunflower League at running back on two occasions...Amassed over 2,000 all-purpose yards last season and totaled 33 touchdowns.

• LARON COUNCIL (Kansas City, Mo.) - Running Back, 5-10, 200 lb.
High School: Center Head Coach: Mark Jackson Parent: Rose Mercer Council Major: Pre-engineering
Notes: As a running back last season, totaled 1,920 yards on 221 attempts (8.7 avg.)...Added 20 rushing TD's...Posted season totals of 200 receiving yards on 14 catches (14.3 avg.) with four of those of the TD variety...First Team All-State selection at running back...First Team All-District and All-Conference as a Linebacker after ending with 127 total tackles as a senior...Suburban Conference Blue Division Co-Division Defensive Player of the Year...Maintained a 3.6 grade point average...Named First Team All-District punter, running back and defensive back in 2003.

• KEELEN GREEN (Sulphur Springs, Tex.) - Wide Receiver, 5-7, 155 lb.
High School: Sulphur Springs Head Coach: Brad Turner Parents: Kendreck & Tamie Cady Major: Business/Accounting
Notes: 2004 First Team All-State in class 4A as a kick returner and punt returner...First Team All-District last year at running back...Posted 506 receiving yards on 49 catches (10.3 avg.) including four TD's last season...In 2004, had 285 rushing yards on 27 rushes (10.6 avg.) including six TD's...Finished his senior season with three kick return for touchdown's and averaged 24 yards per kickoff return and 17 yards per punt return...Member of the National Honor Society...Took fourth in the 100 meters at state competition as a junior.

• ROSS HASTERT (Harlan, Iowa) - Offensive Center, 6-2, 252 lb.
High School: Harlan Community Head Coach: Curt Bladt Parents: Robert & Tammy Hastert Major: Agriculture
Notes: Mentioned on the Iowa Newspaper Association and Des Moines Register First Team Class 3A All-State teams...Recognized on the Omaha World Herald First Team All-Southwest Iowa Team...First Team All-District pick on the offensive line...Anchored offensive line for the two-time state champions...In 2003, earned third-place in the district shot put.

• EDWARD "EJ" HAWKINS (Elgin, Tex.) - Cornerback, 5-9, 165 lb.
High School: Lexington Head Coach: Jason Holcomb Parent: Edward Hawkins Major: Psychology
Notes: First Team All-District selection at wide receiver and defensive back as a senior...Last season, was a Brazos Valley All-Academic pick and Texas High School Coaches Association Football All-Star Game nominee...First Team All-District at wide-out and Second Team All-District at corner back in 2003...In basketball, selected to Second Team All-District in 2003...State track qualifier in the long jump, 4x100 and 4x200 as a junior.


• DRAYTON "DRAY" JOHNSON (Mesquite, Tex.) - Quarterback, 5-10, 170 lb.
High School: Mesquite Head Coach: Steve Halpin Parents: Edward & Tina Taylor Major: Criminal Justice
Notes: Selected to the First Team All-District Class 5A squad in Texas...Was the Area Player of the Year...Named Team Most Valuable Player last season as he helped lead Mesquite High to the third round of the playoffs...Posted 900 passing yards and 630 rushing yards while accounting for 17 touchdowns as a senior...Honored with the Player of the Year in the city of Mesquite.

• JUSTIN KNOX (Sedalia, Mo.) - Defensive End, 6-4, 230 lb.
High School: Smith-Cotton Head Coach: Mark Johnson Parents: Raymond Knox & Judy Childers Major: Undecided
Notes: 2004 Second Team All-State pick at linebacker...Three-time Smith-Cotton League Defensive Player of the Year...Led the team all four years in total tackles and leaves with the fourth-highest career tackle output in the state of Missouri...Selected to the First Team Coaches All-District and First Team Newswriters All-District club on three occasions...Also, was a Second Team All-Conference pick at tight end as a junior...2003 Presidential National A Honor Roll.

• MARCUS MARTIN (Holden, Mo.) - Free Safety, 6-0, 190 lb.

Notes: All-District pick at defensive back in 2003...KMZU "Dream Team" as DB...All-Conference on both offense and defense for two years...Third-Team All-State and All-District honoree at running back in 2004...Compiled 1,973 rushing yards on 170 carries last season (11.6 avg.)...As a junior, accounted for 928 rushing yards as the quarterback en route to First Team All-District Class 2A honors.
