Berlanga, Helm & Long Participate in Cactus Bowl
KINGSVILLE, Tex. -- Northwest Missouri State University football seniors Luis Berlanga (Monterrey, Mexico), Gabriel Helms (St. Louis, Mo.) and Adam Long (Bennington, Neb.) participated at the 2005 Whataburger Cactus Bowl last Friday. All three players were members of the West squad. After holding a 15-10 edge in the third quarter, the West allowed a late touchdown in the 18-15 loss to the East.
Berlanga converted on one-of-one PAT attempts but missed on two field goals of 39 and 46 yards. Helms was a reserve in the defensive secondary and came away with one pass defended. Long was a starter at linebacker as he totaled six tackles on four solo stops - he added one tackle-for-a-loss for one yard. Long was second on the West in total tackles.
The Cactus Bowl is an all-star game of elite NCAA Division II athletes where several get a chance to play in front of NFL scouts. In 2002, 22 players who participated in the Cactus Bowl were either drafted or signed by various NFL teams. The three Bearcats were part of a group of 12 from the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) - Northwest and Central Missouri State had the most members with three apiece.
