Bearcats Picked No. 4 in Final Coaches Poll; Joel Mathews Earns Weekly Honor

MARYVILLE, Mo. -- The Northwest Missouri State University football team was picked at No. 4 in the final regular season American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division II Coaches' poll, announced today. The Bearcats were selected at No. 3 in the (media) poll. In the Fall Classic at Arrowhead III last Saturday, the 'Cats dropped a 21-17 decision to No. 1 Pittsburg State - Northwest was ranked at No. 2 last week. PSU earned the top spot in both of the national polls.

The Bearcats are set as the No. 2 seed in the Southwest Region and, after a first-round bye in the NCAA playoffs, are scheduled to host a second round contest, Nov. 20 at Bearcat Stadium with kick-off at 12:00 p.m. They will await the winner of the Texas A&M Kingsville and Southeastern Oklahoma game played in Kingsville next Saturday. Texas A&M Kingsville is a No. 3 seed and sits with an 8-1 overall record and Southeastern Oklahoma is a No. 6 seed and 8-2 on the year.

For tickets, season ticket holders will be given the opportunity, until 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 16 to purchase their season seat for the playoff game. The cost is $12.00 for all reserved seats. Beginning Wednesday, Nov. 17 any unclaimed reserved season tickets can be purchased by the general public. In addition, should Northwest advance and host additional games the same procedure will be utilized.

Tickets will be available for sale through close of business Friday, the week of the game. On the day of the competition, ticket sales and gates will open at 10:30 a.m. with a noon kickoff, and individual game tickets will be available at the following prices: Reserved - $12.00 Adult, General Admission - $8.00,
Student General Admission - $4.00.

• Joel Mathews earns Hut Special Teams Honorable Mention Player of the Week Award
Holding down a 49.0 yard punt average in the Fall Classic at Arrowhead III last Saturday, senior punter Joel Mathews (Omaha, Neb.) has been honored on the Hut Special Teams Honorable Mention Player of the Week list. One of his four punts was pinned inside the Gorilla 20-yard line. On the season, Mathews is third in the league rankings with a 40.3 yard average. Seventeen of his 38 punts that have been inside the opponent 20-yard line.
