Berlanga Lands Two Special Teams Awards

OVERLAND PARK, Mo. -- Senior placekicker Luis Berlanga (Monterrey, Mexico) was recognized as the Wilson@/Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Football Special Teams Player of the Week and the Pizza Hut Special Teams Player of the Week, announced

In the 77-12 'Cat victory against Minnesota State, Moorhead on Saturday, Berlanga booted 11 Point After Attempts (PATs) to set a MIAA record for most in a single game (this stat is not recorded at Northwest.) The 11 PAT attempts also tied an MIAA record that Pittsburg State's Daniel Chappell
holds in 2001. In addition, he booted six of his 11 kick-offs for a touchback in his Northwest debut.
Berlanga was a member of his country's all-star team to participate in the 2002 Aztec Bowl. He connected on a 37-yard field goal in the 15-9 loss to the United State's all-star team comprised of Division III elites.

Berlanga joined Brandon Landry from Missouri-Rolla (Offensive Player of the Week) and Brandon Jones from Pittsburg State (Defensive Player of the Week) as honorees from the MIAA and was one of five Honorable Mention Special Teams picks for the award.
