Bearcats Come Back, Stop MSU-Mankato 23-16

MARYVILLE, Mo. -The No. 18 Northwest Missouri State University football team christened its newly-renovated Rickenbrode Stadium in heart-stopping fashion Saturday afternoon.

The Bearcats trailed 16-10 with less than three minutes remaining in the game. But Josh Lamberson (Soph., Wilber, Neb.) came off the bench and tossed two touchdown passes in a span of 2:02 to lift Northwest to the seven-point victory.

Lamberson entered the game in relief of T.J. Mandl (Jr., Kansas City, Mo.), who passed for 116 yards and one score, but threw three interceptions. Lamberson immediately had an impact, rushing for 36 yards to the Minnesota State-Mankato 11-yard line. But two plays later, Shon Wells (Jr., Rolla, Mo.) fumbled and the Mavericks recovered.

The Northwest defense got a three-and-out, forcing MSU-Mankato to punt with just more than three minutes remaining in the game. Two plays later, Lamberson hooked up with Adam Otte (Sr., Maryville, Mo.) for a 26-yard touchdown pass. The PAT attempt was blocked and the game was tied at 16-16.

The 'Cat defense forced another three-and-out, giving Northwest the ball with 1:26 remaining. A 21-yard punt by the Mavericks put Northwest at the MSU-M 38-yard line. Fullback Mitch Herring (So., Maryville, Mo.) started the drive with a 12-yard run on a broken play. Two plays later, Lamberson completed a tipped pass to Nick Glasnapp (Sr., Maryville, Mo.) to the MSU 14-yard line. After a loss of two and an incompletion, Lamberson faced third down. He found Jamaica Rector (Jr., Celeste, Texas) in the back left corner of the end zone, who leaped high and was able to get one foot down inbounds for the go-ahead score with just 25 seconds remaining.

Jamie Martin added the point-after touchdown and Northwest led 23-16. Two incompletions and a sack ended MSU-Mankato's upset bid.

Northwest led 10-0 early. The Bearcats scored on their first two possessions, but went the next 48:57 before putting any more points on the board.
