Northwest Whips Washburn, 45-14

MARYVILLE, Mo. -The Northwest Missouri State University football team moved above .500 for the first time this season Saturday, running their record to 3-2 with a 45-14 win over Washburn.

Northwest intercepted Washburn passes on all of the Ichabods' first three possessions. One of those interceptions resulted in a touchdown as Pat Whitt (So., Springfield, Mo.) returned the pick 12 yards for a score. Jamie Martin (So., Harlan, Iowa) added the PAT to make it 7-0 less than three minutes into the contest.

Jamaica Rector (Jr., Celeste, Texas) pulled in a 27-yard touchdown pass from Josh Lamberson (So., Wilber, Neb.) late in the first quarter. The score pushed Northwest to a 14-0 advantage. Washburn cut its deficit to seven when Trent Hearn scampered 22 yards around the left end for a touchdown.

Martin added a 24-yard field goal for Northwest midway through the second period to take a 17-7 lead. Mike Fiech (Jr., Innwood, Iowa) scored from two yards out with 2:22 remaining in the first half to cap a 36-yard scoring drive. The drive was set up by a Morris White (Jr., St. Louis, Mo.) blocked punt.

The Bearcats added two more scores in the third quarter to extend the lead to 38-7. Mitch Herring (So., Maryville, Mo.) capped an eight-play 53-yard drive with three-yard TD reception from Lamberson at the 7:08 mark. Shon Wells (Jr., Rolla, Mo.) then busted off a 53-yard touchdown run late in the third.

Fiech picked up his second score of the day on a five-yard run two minutes into the fourth quarter. Fiech carried the ball on all five plays of the 45-yard drive and went over 100 yards. He finished with 105 yards rushing on 15 carries and was the Bearcats' first 100-yard rusher this season.

The Ichabods got on the scoreboard one final time with 6:47 remaining. Mike Odupitan caught a 12-yard pass from Tyler Schuerman to cap a 79-yard scoring drive against the Bearcat backup defenders.

Northwest rolled up 426 yards of offense, compared to just 287 for Washburn. Lamberson finished the day 12-of-21 with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Rector led the receivers with five catches for 81 yards and a score.

Defensively, Adam Long (Jr., Bennington, Neb.) and John Edmonds (Sr., Maryville, Mo.) led the way with six tackles each. Long had two tackles for loss, while Edmonds recorded a sack for a 16-yard loss. Whitt, Gabriel Helms (Jr., St. Louis, Mo.) and Tony Glover (Jr., St. Louis, Mo.) all had interceptions for the 'Cats.
