Three 'Cats Earn Preseason Honors

MARYVILLE, Mo. - Northwest Missouri State University has three football players listed among the 2003 Don Hansen's Football Gazette Preseason All-America team.

The Bearcat defense, which ranked No. 7 in NCAA Division II in scoring defense and No. 30 in total defense, has two members on the Gazette Preseason All-America Team. Linebacker John Edmonds (Sr., Maryville, Mo.) and cornerbacker Darryl Ridley (Sr., Omaha, Neb.) have both been honored by the publication.

Edmonds ranked third on the team in total tackles last season with 66. He led the team with 12 tackles for loss and also recorded three sacks. Ridley tied for the team lead in tackles with 77. He led the team with 13 passes broken up, recorded one interception and forced a fumble. Both Edmonds and Ridley were named first-team All-MIAA last season.

Meanwhile, wide receiver/kick returner Jamaica Rector (Jr., Celeste, Texas) has been named a Preseason All-America as an all-purpose back. Rector ranked in the top 15 in NCAA Division II in three offensive categories. Rector was No. 15 in receiving yards per game, No. 13 in punt returns and No. 15 in all-purpose yardage. He averaged 103.5 yards per game receiving. Rector averaged 14.3 yards per punt return and 152.3 all-purpose yards per contest.

Northwest opens the 2003 season Sept. 6 at South Dakota State University. The Bearcats were 12-1 last season and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II Playoffs.
